From past to present, both the materials composing the resources of libraries and their access to the users have changed. The basic spatial invariance about these very is that the quality of the interior space provides the perception and long term use of which the most important factor is the lighting of the space. In the study, first, the effects of sunlight on library spaces have been discussed and at the second stage, the effects of artificial lighting when the daylight is insufficient have been examined. In this context, the accepted standards up to present have been identified by investigating both Turkish and International standards. It has been aimed to make a comparison of the obtained data with the Middle East Technical University’s Central Library. For a better comparison, number of lamps in the reading and study halls, their power and type together with colors, texture and type of covering materials in the space at the Middle East Technical University’s Central Library has been examined. The amount of ambient light has been calculated by formulating the obtained data.“İnsanı hayvandan ayıran en önemli özelliklerden birisi bilgisini gelecek nesillere aktarabilmesidir.”1 Toplumların gelişiminde en önemli rollerden birisini oluşturan bilgi toplama ve kitlelere sunma gereksinimi tarih boyunca önemini arttırarak devam etmiştir. Geçmişten günümüze kütüphanelerin kaynaklarını oluşturan materyaller değişim gösterirken, hizmet verdiği kullanıcı kitlesine ulaşımı da zaman içerisinde değişmiştir. Bütün bu verilerin temel değişmezliği ise okuyucunun kullandığı mekân kalitesinin algılama ve uzun süre kullanımı sağlamasıdır ki bunun en önemli etkenlerinden birisi de mekân aydınlatmasıdır. Çalışmada öncelikle kütüphane mekânlarında gün ışığının etkileri tartışılmış olup, ikinci aşamada gün ışığının yetersiz olduğu saatlerde yapay aydınlatmanın etkileri incelenmeye çalışılmıştır. Bu kapsamda Türk ve Uluslar arası standartlar araştırılarak günümüze kadar yapılmış ve kabul edilmiş standartlar tespit edilmiştir. Elde edilen veriler, araştırmamızın örneklemesini oluşturan Orta Doğu Teknik Üniversitesi Merkez Kütüphanesi ile karşılaştırılması hedeflenmiştir. Değerlendirmenin sağlıklı yapılabilmesi için Orta Doğu Teknik Üniversitesi Merkez kütüphanesinin okuma ve çalışma salonlarının var olan lamda sayıları, güçleri, cinsleri ile mekan içindeki kaplama malzemelerinin cinsleri, dokular ve renkleri incelenmiştir. Elde edilen veriler formüle edilerek ortam ışık miktarı hesaplanmıştır.trinterior architecture and environmental designThesis
