Abstract
Description
Comparison of Structural Break Tests in Time Series with
Simulation Method
ABSTRACT: In a time series, inclination coefficients, fixed terms and trends are not always stable throughout the sample, policy changes, permanent changes (structural breaks) due to crises, wars can occur. Regression results without taking into account structural breaks may not reflect actual values. In this context, it is important to correctly detect structural break. In this thesis study, the performance of the tests that determine the date of structural breakage was compared in the time series data. In this context, the concept of structural break is explained first, the interaction between the unit root problem and what problems it causes and the methods used frequently in the determination of structural break are defined. Then, theoretical explanations of the tests that determine the date of structural breakage and are frequently used are given. The performance of these tests; the changing variance was evaluated by simulation study in the context of the location of the break and the coefficient of the break by creating a problem-free series such as unit root. Simulation results showed that the performance of some tests that determine the date of structural break is poor for all cases examined, while some tests are sensitive to the location of the break and depending on the size of the break. In the study, structural breaks of the real exchange rate series of Turkey were determined and the Kapetanios (2005) test was concluded to be performing well. When these empirical application and simulation results are evaluated together, the strength of the Kapetanios test doesn’t change depending on the data structure.
