    REQUIREMENTS OF THE SIMULTANEOUS INTERPRETATION FOR THE UNDERGRADUATE LEVEL IN SYRIA

    Simultaneous interpretation is considered as a bridge that facilitates communication in multilingual international events. At the moment, Syria needs a good number of simultaneous interpreters due to the increase in the number of international events that have been held in and about the country. The real demand is for qualified interpreters and the adequate quality of education on simultaneous interpreting. However, Syrian universities lack providing education on simultaneous interpretation. There is a need to define the requirements and skills that can be used in the creation of programs for simultaneous interpreting. The purpose of this thesis is to come up with suggestions for course descriptions for the requirements of simultaneous interpreting in the English department, Idleb University. The study is conducted by using unstructured interviews with the guidance of open-ended questions and the study population is fifty academic lecturers in the English department. The results demonstrate that the SI course is thought to cover two semesters with the first semester covering introductory sections and the second involving advanced simultaneous interpreting training. Assessment is carried out using assignments and examinations. The working languages for the course include Arabic and English. The curriculum includes various topics of interpretation on psychology, communication skills, relevant skills required for the simultaneous interpretation such as using technology, and professional and ethical behavior, etc.

    A COMPARATIVE ANALYSIS OF THE TRANSLATION OF THE CULTURAL ELEMENTS IN WUTHERING HEIGHTS BY EMILY BRONTË

    In this research the translation of cultural elements from English to Arabic in the English novel Wuthering Heights by Emily Bronte is investigated. In this study, cultural elements found in Wuthering Heights and how translator Mamdouh Haqqi translated these elements into Arabic are analyzed. The thesis focuses on the cultural elements in translating the novel Wuthering Heights written by Emily Bronte, born in 1818. The novel has been translated into many languages, including Arabic. The focus is on the recognition of the writer of this novel since it is known, the life of the writer would inevitably affect her writings; after that, the study deals with the Arabic translation and how the translation of literary texts in a cultural form appropriate to society contributes mainly to preserving the linguistic and traditional aspects of the original text. Another concern of this thesis is to explore the strategies of translating metaphor from English into Arabic, bearing in mind the cultural, social, and political aspects in Wuthering Heights.

    A COMPARATIVE STUDY ON DIFFERENT TURKISH TRANSLATIONS OF DICKENS’S A TALE OF TWO CITIES WITHIN THE FRAMEWORK OF EQUIVALENCE

    Translation of a literary text is a process which possesses more difficulties and authentic features than informative or other types of texts. Therefore, it is almost impossible to achieve the same quality, particularly in terms of equivalence. When a literary text is translated by different translators, it is inevitable that target texts vary, even if the target texts include the same textual elements such as vocabulary, syntax, style, language. This study aims to compare five different Turkish translations of the novel A Tale of Two Cities by Charles Dickens in terms of equivalence by the guidance of several theories related to literary translation including those of Eugene Nida, Gideon Toury and Werner Koller. Furthermore, the evolution of the novel as a literary genre throughout history, Dickens’s biography, literary movements in the 19th century English literature are also highlighted in this study to give background information on the era, when A Tale of Two Cities was written. During the process of comparison, literary features of the novel like style, literary tradition that it belongs to, and socioeconomic and political atmosphere of England were taken into consideration. Results achieved through the comparison of target texts show the importance of decisions made by the translator and that literary translation requires more than proficiency in the source and target languages.

    TRANSLATING THE ‘OTHER’ FOR A DISTANT EYE: TRANSLATION OF IMAGES IN ANAYURT OTELİ BY YUSUF ATILGAN FROM A TRANSLATION STUDIES AND IMAGOLOGY PERSPECTIVE

    In this study, the relation between translation studies and imagology is tried to be studied from a post-structural perspective in the context of translations of the components such as socio-culture, ideology etc. that constitute the images, which are the representations of the system in the Turkish literature texts. In this regard, a series of research questions were developed and answered. In this context, before examining the translation of the book titled Anayurt Oteli made from Turkish into English with Venuti's foreignization and domestication translation strategies, which are discussed under post-structural translation theories, on the basis of translation studies and imagology, the translation practices/traditions/norms of the Anglo-American system have been tried to be justified according to the position it situates itself against Turkish language and system. How images that belong to the source text are rewritten in the target text under which justifications have also been analyzed within the relation of translation studies and imagology. In this framework, the unequal relations between Turkish and English languages and systems, the binary oppositions caused by the positions these systems situate themselves, the subjectivity of the translator have been analyzed. Moreover, visibility-invisibility of the source text and the source text images, which represent the cultural, social and ideological signs of the source system and the translator, is discussed in terms of post-structuralist translation theories and all of these have been analyzed in the translation made from Turkish into English. As a result, Turkish literary translation is approached with a post-structuralist translation approach, the reasons behind the dynamics of the target text-oriented Anglo-American translation system are tried to be justified, its relationship with the rewriting approach is explained, and how all the above-mentioned elements are reflected in translation on the basis of Venuti’s translation strategies in the context of imagology-translation studies have been studied.

    THE STUDY OF CONTRACT TRANSLATION AND ITS CHALLENGES

    This thesis is a descriptive study in which the purpose is to present contract translation and the challenges encountered during translation. Qualitative research methodology was used to achieve the study objective. Data has been obtained from various companies, banks, and the internet. Sample contracts and translations on different subjects are used. Special emphasis is given to the language of the contract in terms of lexical and syntactic levels, to technical writing, and technical translation theories. The comparative analysis conducted in this study showed that the most obvious translation difficulties for contracts were: lexical difficulties, grammar difficulties, and syntactic difficulties. Translation goals such as clarity, accuracy, precision, and strategies such as borrowing, adaptation, determination, explanation are determined in sample contract translations.

    LITERARY TRANSATION: AN ANALYSIS OF SAADAWI’SFRANKENSTEIN IN BAGHDAD

    This study focuses on analyzing the strategies adopted by Jonathan Wright in his translation of Saadawi‘s novel, Frankenstein in Baghdad, from a Cultural linguistic approach. It claims that Wright‘s translation, in Newmark‘s terms, is ―communicative‖ in nature, since it focuses much on the transfer of the verbal message of the source text. As this study argues, Wright‘s translation is mostly concerned with its target reader. In terms of culture, Wright employs many strategies according to whether the receiving culture has the same equivalents. Consequently, it will demonstrate the influence of such strategies on the process of translating Saadawi‘s novel Wright‘s translation does provide the cultural equivalent whenever possible. However, since the Arabic and English languages belong to two distant cultures, the cultural loss seems to be inevitable in translation, especially in translating literary works. Therefore, this study will analyze Wright‘s translation strategies employed to transfer the cultural markers, or the culture-specific items, in Saadawi‘s novel, which constitute its cultural identity. In so doing, this study will provide an account of the inevitable cultural losses in Wright‘s translation. These losses will be categorized using Hanadi AL-Masri‘s taxonomy of cultural losses which are sorted according to the kind of change, which is as variable as the translation strategy used, they cause to the source text.

    POETRY TRANSLATION: A CASE STUDY OF MAHMOUD DARWISH’S MURAL TRANSLATIONS

    In this thesis, discussing and analysing Darwish's Mural along with the problems and strategies of translating it into English and assessing the extent to which these strategies are acceptable is sought. In other words, this study is more of a structural analysis as it goes on to provides a detailed full explanation of Mural, the techniques used in its writing, in addition to its content, and its characteristics. Furthermore, the quality of the translations done by Berger and Hammami on the one hand, and Fady Joudah on the other, will be analysed as to whom was more accurate in depicting the poet‘s messages more effectively on a lexical, and thematic levels among others. The study goes on to offer a thorough analysis of the translation process and decisions taken during the translation, to assess the better translation. The paper concluded that, Berger and Hammami did not preserve the style of the author, nor norms of the target language, which might be due to individual choices. While, Joudah tried as much as possible, in his translation, to stick to the original which is a great advantage for him. But still, Berger and Hammami's translation moved and conveyed some of the culture related techniques i.e. intertextuality in a slightly better way, which might be due to their wider cultural knowledge especially of the TL culture.

    A DESCRIPTIVE AND COMPARATIVE STUDY ON CENSORSHIP IN THE TURKISH TRANSLATIONS OF JACK KEROUAC’S ON THE ROAD

    This study aims to reveal the parts censored in the Turkish translations of Jack Kerouac’s On The Road (1951). In this study, it is benefited from Descriptive Explanatory Translation Studies (DETS), Toury’s Norms, and Andre Lefevere’s “Translation as Rewriting” by taking into consideration the agents like publishers, translators, editors, and target readers as well as sociocultural structures such as norms, values, ideologies and power relations. Jack Kerouac’s On The Road is selected as the case study of this thesis because the novel is censored both in America and Turkey to make the novel appropriate for the target readers. The fifty examples which are arbitrarily chosen from the original scroll of On The Road and two different Turkish translations are analyzed. The censorship analysis of the words, sentences, and paragraphs is conducted under the four categories which are omission, addition, deletion, and rewriting. The results demonstrate that, the novel translated into Turkish in 1993, has censorship more than the 2019 translation. It is revealed that in the investigated parts, the deletion as a strategy to censor in On The Road is applied more than the other three strategies. The agents’ perspectives, and the sociocultural structures such as norms, values and ideologies throughout the translation periods are observed to have a big influence on the censorship which is applied to both source and target language.

    DIFFICULTIES IN TRANSLATING CULTURE SPECIFIC TERMS FROM ARABIC INTO ENGLISH: THE PROBLEM OF EQUIVALENCE

    This study aims to highlight the concept of cultural translation, its strategies, its impact and its role in cultural exchange and to identify the problems faced by the translator in the translation process. In order to produce a clear and understandable translation in the target language, the study showed the most important problems that face the translator. The study also discussed the most important methods used in cultural translation to facilitate the task of translation. In this research, a qualitative method is preferred. This study was conducted via collecting cultural samples and translating them by using the cultural translation methods. The used method in this study resulted in reducing the errors and avoiding the problems that face the translator, especially the problem of equivalence.

    SELF-TRANSLATION AND THE SELF-TRANSLATED AUTHOR: TRUE INTERPRETATION OR A REWRITING PROCESS SAMUEL BECKETT’S ENDGAME

    Translation is regarded as an activity in which a message is rendered or transmitted from SL to TL. The general perception in this multi-step translation process is that the author produces the ST and the outcome (translation) is achieved by the translator. Nonetheless, within the framework of self-translation, the author and translator are the same. This study aims to compare, contrast and analyze self translation of Fin de Partie written in French into English as Endgame by Samuel Beckett in line with the playwright’s identity as a self-translator. The biography of Samuel Beckett, the play’s historical background, literary style and analysis, characters and characterization, drama translation techniques as well as the Theatre of the Absurd are also described to enlighten the analysis. The ST and TT of the play are compared and classified within the framework of translation procedures and strategies proposed by Vinay and Darbelnet in their book Comparative Stylistics of French and English. The findings reveal that the exogenous bilingual playwright and translator Samuel Beckett conveys equivalence within liberty.

    SUBTITLE TRANSLATION: CHALLENGES AND STRATEGIES IN TRANSLATING HUMOUR IN ARABIC TRANSLATION OF TV SHOW FRIENDS

    This study discusses the challenges faced when translating humour into subtitles, taking the American TV show Friends as the case study of this research. After reviewing some literature regarding subtitles, theories and strategies the analysis will be done based on Delabastita’s strategies. The case study is based on two translations. One is by Netflix and the second one by fan translation. This study aims to answer the following questions: What are the strategies used to translate humour? Whether there is a specific strategy that could be used to translate all types of verbal humour? What are the differences and similarities between the two translators? What are the reasons behind the translators’ choice? After analysing the problematic examples, the results showed that Delabstitas strategies were all applicable to the samples of this study. There was not a specific strategy applied to all types of verbal humour, as the outcomes of this study showed that in some cases both translators adopted two different strategies dealing with the same sample. In contrast there was a noticeable difference in the translators’ choice of some of the strategies which indicates fan translator efforts to provoke a laughter and avoiding the ambiguity in the TL.

    A COMPARATIVE STUDY OF CENSORSHIP ON OSCAR WILDE’S THE PICTURE OF DORIAN GRAY’S EARLIEST AND THE LATEST TRANSLATIONS

    Censorship is a phenomenon that can be encountered in different forms, places and times, starting with the language to today’s world. This frequently used method mostly in politics can be applied in translations as a preference of the translators or as a necessity that can be shaped by the requirements of a specific time. The effects of the censorship applied to the original also known as the source text both before and after its publication, especially because of the connection with homosexuality on social, cultural and religious aspects, had not been known until the uncensored version of the book was published 120 years later. The change of the traditional perspective, the increase on sexual awareness to a large extent all over the world with the contribution of the studies done in the fields of sexual identities and social responsibilities helped the publication of the novel, the uncensored The Picture of Dorian Gray, with the author’s first emotions, expressions and messages he wanted to convey to his readers as they were in the first place. The argument defended in this thesis is that, with the contribution of the first uncensored translation first translated by Ülker İnce in 2014, the analize with the examples and discussions on the differences arising from the censorship applied directly to the English (source) text of the novel The Picture of Dorian Gray and the consequences of the censorship on the earliest censored translation in 1938 and the first uncensored Turkish translation in 2014. The differences between the censored and the uncensored texts were examined in parallel with the changes made in the original text, the semantic and holistic differences were discussed under sociocultural elements of both today and 120 years ago.

    THE ARABIC TRANSLATION OF CULTURE SPECIFIC ITEMS IN THE AFRICAN POSTCOLONIAL NOVEL THINGS FALL APART

    This thesis investigates the translation of culture-specific items (CSI) from English into Arabic in the African postcolonial novel Things Fall Apart by Chinua Achebe. Things Fall Apart is translated by the Arab Jordanian translator Sameer Ezzat under the tittle تتداعى أشياء .This study has been conducted under Paul Bandia’s tripartite approach to postcolonial texts. Firstly, the author’s strategies in portraying the CSIs such as customs, material culture, and ecology into the colonizer’s language were analysed. Then, the translator’s strategies in rendering these culture-specific items into the target language Arabic were discussed. In the original postcolonial text, Achebe used various CSIs to highlight the African essence in the European language. Achebe employed different strategies such as cushioning to portray the CSIs in the postcolonial text and make the hybrid text clearer. On the other hand, Sameer Ezzat, in translating CSIs into Arabic used a literal translation strategy in most of his translations to keep the author's original idea and intentions in the target text. However, the translator’s choice may make the translated CSIs ambiguous for the target reader. Translating culture-specific elements in the postcolonial text is crucial since there is no culture overlap between two languages in most cases. The lack of cultural knowledge affects the translation and may make it ambiguous and inaccurate for the target reader.

    TRANSLATION OF REGISTER IN TURKISH, AZERI, AND RUSSIAN TRANSLATIONS OF J. D. SALINGER’S THE CATCHER IN THE RYE

    The study is compatible with the analysis of the Register analysis of J. D. Salinger's The Catcher in the Rye, and deals with the differences in three different languages. The novel, translated with the titles The Catcher in the Rye, the English source text, Turkish Çavdar Tarlasında Çocuklar, Azeri Çovdarlıqda uçurumdan qoruyan and Russian Над пропастью во ржи has been analyzed in terms of register translation. Register translation was handled within the framework of Steiner's register model under three sub-variations, namely area, tenor, and format, and the difficulties faced by translators while translating this work or their ability to adapt to the text were analyzed. Both quantitative and qualitative research techniques were used as a research method, and content analysis was envisaged from qualitative data. In the study of register translation, Stainer’s model was taken as an example, and its relationship with branches such as context, genre and pragmatics was discussed, and syntax, grammar, and morphology were also examined. The Catcher in the Rye was examined in depth by sub-variations of the register titles by taking samples of the same part in three other languages, Turkish, Azeri and Russian, concerning the original content. In the findings explained with examples, the compatibility of all three languages with the Register analysis theory is discussed.

    Strategies to Overcome Challenges in Technical Translation

    With globalization the translation of technical texts gained an importance. Translation of technical texts require deep knowledge about the subject matter since both in the source and target text a specialized language is used. Specialized language necessitates a competency in terminology and a number of strategies can be used by the translators to overcome the challenges that may arise during the process of translation. The purpose of this thesis is to put forth the strategies that can be employed in technical translation to overcome the challenges with providing an outline both from the history of technical translation and from the theories reletad to translation. Special importance is given to the characteristics of technical texts, to the language used in these texts and to their text types. Functionalist Approaches are considered to be important in technical translation for achieving a functional result and three sample texts with their translations are analyzed within the scope of functionalist approaches. Strategies like borrowing, particularization, description and establishing equivalances in the target language are identified in the translations of the sample texts.

    HISTORY AND TRANSLATION: A STUDY ON THE HISTORY OF TECHNICAL TRANSLATION IN TURKEY

    In the globalized world, with the advancement of technology and increasing demand for technical communication, technical translation gained a significant importance. Today, in the world, technical translation comprises almost 90 % percent of the world’s total translation and this situation necessitates attention to be given to the context of technical translation from a multi-dimensional viewpoint. Within this context, the relation between History and Translation come to the fore in terms of recording of the past events and characters in chronological and geographical order in terms of making a study on the workings of technical translation. On the other hand technical translation has been of secondary importance in a Translation Studies corpus. Thanks to academic studies and surveys, and the growing demand for technical translation and the technical writing, technical translation with all its historical and linguistic aspects has began to be taken up by and large. Framed by such a background, this thesis aims to make a study on the history and development of technical translation in Turkey. It begins from the Ottomans and focuses on the relation between History and Translation for a theoretical background and moves from there to make a survey of how technical translation developed and took place in Turkey dating back to Seljuks and the Ottomans, and all the way into the Turkish Republic.

    A MODEL FOR TECHNICAL TRANSLATION TRAINING IN UNIVERSITY DEPARTMENTS OF TRANSLATION & INTERPRETATION IN LINE WITH TRANSLATION MARKET REQUIREMENTS IN TURKEY

    In parallel with the rapidly improving and changing nature of science and technology, technical translation has a leading role in meeting the requirements and demands of the global industry. One of the pillars of this function is characterized by technical translation training in universities. This study aims to reveal the challenges experienced in universities and translation market for catching up on technical translation, and to put forward a model as a medium to lay a bridge. In order to get most satisfactory and reliable outcomes, two questionnaires were conducted with senior students at university departments of translation and interpretation, and translators from the translation market. Besides, three instructors teaching technical translation were interviewed to get more reliable results. A comprehensive analysis was carried out in the light of relevant data and the findings were discussed from different perspectives relating to the views and attitudes of future translators / interpreters, the scope of translator training within university curriculum, requirements and demands of the translation market. This study is expected to give rise to futher research in this field.

    GENDER AND TRANSLATION: A CASE OF JEANETTE WINTERSON

    The purpose of this thesis is to search out how the gender-based expressions used by a feminist and postmodernist author have been reflected in the target language in which it was translated by a feminist and postmodernist-oriented translator without any omissions or censorships. First of all, literary translation and its problems are discussed briefly; after that gender and translation notions, and the relation between them are touched upon. This study is carried in order to search out how gender oriented discourse was translated into Turkish. Jeanette Winterson, who is a feminist and postmodernist writer, and Pınar Kür, who translated Winterson's works into Turkish, are chosen for the analysis. It is observed that the original work and the translated one provided the same atmosphere in terms of gender, and the gender based discourse is protected in the translation of Jeanette Winterson's Sexing the Cherry into Turkish. In conlusion, there was no manipulation or censorship in the translation of Pınar Kür, the style of Winterson can be easily observed in the target language.

    CRITERIA AND THE IMPORTANT ASPECTS OF OPERA LIBRETTI TRANSLATION INTO TURKISH

    Opera was created in order to express emotions via the power of words and music and this thesis discusses the criteria and the important aspects of opera libretti translation into a target language, in this case, into Turkish. Moreover, the operas that have been translated, their translators and the years when they were translated shall also be put forward. In this study, first, the surfacing of opera in Europe shall be looked into briefly and then its emergence in the Ottoman Empire due to the Westernization process and development in the early years of the Republic of Turkey due to forming a new country of Western values, culture and understanding shall be mentioned. Secondly, some theoretical approaches to translating opera libretti in terms of hybrid-text type and the location of translation and translated opera libretti in the Ottoman and Turkish literary polysystem from the point of Polysystem theory shall be discussed. Then, the results of the interviews which were in ‘survey’ design method and carried out by five opera performers working in Ankara State Opera and Ballet shall be discussed in light of the information gained from the scholars and theoreticians of the field.

    TRANSLATION OF CHILDREN’S LITERATURE: A STUDY ON KELOĞLAN MASALLARI AND THEIR TRANSLATIONS INTO ENGLISH

    The purpose of this thesis is to analyze folktales within children’s literature and to shed some light on their translations. With this purpose, among Keloğlan Masalları “Keloğlan and the Magician” and “Keloğlan and Ooh-Geene” are chosen. The tales are analyzed in terms of Lawrence Venuti’s domestication and foreignization. However, Vinay and Darbalnet’s procedures of translation are taken into consideration in the process of analyzing the translation techniques of Keloğlan Masalları into English. In the result of the study, it is concluded that, as the translation process is made from non-dominant culture to dominant culture, and the main purpose of translating is to introduce Turkish culture to Western Cultures; in order to emphasize cultural, historical, or linguistic features of source text, foreignization is mostly used.
